EZ Master Discount documentation

How to create and manage quantity tier, whole order and Buy X Get Y discounts in your Shopify store with EZ Master Discount.

Before you start

EZ Master Discount is being prepared for the Shopify App Store. This documentation describes the app as it will work at launch. Join the launch email to hear the day it is listed.

  • Plans. It works on every Shopify plan.
  • Permissions. The app asks for two: to read your products and collections, so you can pick them, and to write discounts, so it can create them.
  • Your theme. Nothing is added to your theme. Discounts run on Shopify Functions, inside Shopify’s own checkout.

Install the app

  1. Find EZ Master Discount in the Shopify App Store and click Install.
  2. Review the permissions and approve them.
  3. The app opens in your Shopify admin, under Apps.

You can also start from Shopify’s own Discounts page: click Create discount and choose EZ Master Discount from the list of discount types.

The app at a glance

The Home page has a tile for each kind of discount, with how many you have and two buttons: Create discount and View discounts. Below the tiles is a table of every discount the app has made.

Each kind of discount also has its own page in the app menu:

KindBest for
Quantity basedVolume pricing: buy more of a product, pay less per unit
Whole orderSpend thresholds: a percentage off, free shipping, or both
Buy X Get YOffers like buy 2, get 1 free, or buy a shirt, get a hat half price

Every create and edit page has a live preview beside the form. It is explained in Check it in the live preview.

Quantity tier discounts

A quantity tier discount takes a percentage off once a customer adds enough units. Open Quantity based and click Create discount.

Tiers. Add up to ten tiers. Each has a From quantity, a To quantity and a Percentage off. For example:

From quantityTo quantityPercentage off
2310%
4915%
10(empty)20%
  • Leave To quantity empty for no upper limit.
  • Set both to the same number to match an exact quantity.
  • Ranges cannot overlap. The app tells you which tiers clash.

Discount only this many units. Optional, per tier. Caps how many units in the cart get the discount. Units are counted in the order they appear in the cart.

Applies to. Choose all products, specific products or specific collections, up to 100 of each. Only matching items count toward the quantity, and only they are discounted.

Whole order discounts

A whole order discount takes a percentage off the order once its subtotal reaches a threshold. Open Whole order and click Create discount.

Thresholds. Each threshold has a Spend at least amount and a Percentage off. When a cart reaches several thresholds, the best percentage applies. For example, 5% off over $50 and 10% off over $100.

Free shipping. Tick Also give free shipping on any threshold. A threshold can give free shipping only: set its percentage to 0. Once a cart reaches a threshold with free shipping, spending more never takes it away.

Maximum discount amount. Optional. The most the discount can take off one order, whatever the percentage works out to.

Good to know:

  • Amounts are in your store’s currency. When a customer shops in another currency, the threshold is converted, so it is worth the same everywhere.
  • The subtotal is checked before shipping and taxes.
  • Whole order discounts apply to the whole order. They cannot be limited to certain products.

Buy X Get Y discounts

A Buy X Get Y discount gives some items free or at a reduced price when a customer buys others. Open Buy X Get Y and click Create discount.

Customer buys. Set a Quantity and choose the Items from: specific products, specific collections or any product.

Customer gets. Set a Quantity and choose the items: the same items the customer buys, specific products or specific collections. Then choose Free or a Percentage off.

Limit. Maximum uses per order sets how many times the offer can repeat in one cart. Leave it empty for no limit.

How it is worked out:

  • The cheapest eligible units are always the ones discounted.
  • A unit never counts as both a bought item and a discounted one.
  • The offer repeats as often as the cart allows. With buy 2 get 1 free, a cart of six eligible items gets two free.

Codes, customers and timing

These settings are the same for every kind of discount.

Method. Choose Automatic discount, which applies in the cart with no code, or Discount code, which customers enter at checkout. Only codes can have usage limits:

  • Total number of uses across all customers.
  • Limit to one use per customer.

Eligible customers. Choose who can use the discount:

  • All customers
  • Signed in customers
  • Customers with no previous orders
  • Customers with at least one previous order

Every option except all customers needs the shopper to be signed in, so Shopify knows who they are.

Dates. Set a Start date and, if you like, an End date. Dates and times use your store’s time zone.

Days and hours. Choose the days of the week the discount runs and, if you like, turn on Only during set hours and pick a From and To time, in 30 minute steps. Hours that cross midnight belong to the day they start, so Saturday 22:00 to 06:00 is still running at 02:00 on Sunday.

Combinations. Choose whether the discount can combine with your other discounts:

  • Let this discount combine with product discounts (on whole order discounts), or with whole order discounts (on product discounts).
  • Let this discount combine with shipping discounts.

A discount never combines with another of the same class. Buy X Get Y discounts do not combine with other product discounts: when both could apply, Shopify gives the customer the better one.

Check it in the live preview

The preview beside the form runs the same code Shopify runs at checkout, on a demo cart, so what you see is what your customers will get.

  • Change quantities with the plus and minus buttons.
  • Switch the shopper between a guest, a new customer and a returning customer, to test customer rules.
  • Read What happens, a plain sentence for each line: what was taken off, or why nothing was.
  • The cart uses the products and collections you picked, next to an item that does not qualify.

Drafts, publishing and statuses

A discount is either Active or Draft.

  • Active means it is running, or scheduled to start on a later date. The list shows the start date.
  • Draft means it cannot apply. That is either a discount you saved as a draft, or one whose end date has passed.

On every create and edit page you can Save as draft instead of saving. Editing a draft shows Publish instead of Save. In any list, a draft has a Publish action and an active discount has Move to draft.

  • Publishing a draft you saved restores the dates you set.
  • Publishing a discount whose end date has passed starts it again and clears the end date.

Shopify has no drafts of its own, so on Shopify’s Discounts page an app draft shows as scheduled to start in 2099. That date is what keeps it from applying. Your own dates are kept safely and come back when you publish.

Edit, bulk actions and deleting

Edit. Click a discount in any list to change it. The method (automatic or code) and the kind of discount cannot be changed after it is created. Create a new discount to switch.

Bulk actions. Tick the discounts you want, or use the box in the header to select all, then choose Publish, Move to draft or Delete from the bar above the list. Each asks you to confirm first. If some discounts cannot be changed, the app lists them by name and the rest still go through.

Delete. Deleting a discount removes it from your store and cannot be undone.

Unsaved changes. If you try to leave a page with changes you have not saved, the app asks whether to save them as a draft first.

Troubleshooting

A discount does not apply. Check these in order:

  1. It is Active, and today is between its start and end dates.
  2. Today and the current time are inside its Days and hours, in your store’s time zone.
  3. The cart has enough qualifying items, or a high enough subtotal.
  4. The customer meets the Eligible customers rule. Rules other than all customers need the shopper to be signed in.
  5. For a code, it has uses left and the customer has not already used it.
  6. Another discount is not taking its place. Check the combination settings on both.

A discount still shows after its end time. Shopify works out discounts when a cart changes. A cart left open past the end time keeps its discount until something in it changes, and checkout always works it out again.

A Buy X Get Y item is not free. Remember that the cheapest eligible unit is the one discounted, and that the offer needs the full bought quantity for every free item.

Uninstalling

EZ Master Discount adds nothing to your theme, so there is no code to clean up. Uninstall it from Settings, then Apps and sales channels in your Shopify admin.
