Why quantity discounts work
A quantity discount rewards a customer for buying more in one order: “Buy 3, save 10%”. Done well, it raises your average order value, moves more stock and makes the extra item feel like the sensible choice rather than an upsell.
They suit products people buy more than one of: consumables, gifts, clothing basics, supplies, and anything sold to businesses in bulk.
The four kinds of volume discount
Tiered quantity discounts
The more units in the cart, the bigger the discount. For example:
- 2 to 3 units: 10% off
- 4 to 5 units: 15% off
- 6 or more: 20% off
Only the highest tier the cart reaches applies, so discounts never stack on top of each other.
Spend thresholds on the whole order
A percentage off once the order reaches a total, such as 10% off orders over $75 and 15% over $150. Free shipping is often tied to a threshold too, which gives customers a clear target.
Buy X Get Y
“Buy 2, get 1 free” or “buy a shirt, get a tie at half price”. The free or discounted item is usually the cheapest eligible one, so the offer stays affordable for you.
Bundles
A fixed set of products sold together at a lower price than buying them separately. Bundles work best for products that are naturally used together.
What Shopify does on its own
Shopify’s built-in discounts cover a lot: amount off products, amount off the order, Buy X Get Y and free shipping, each as an automatic discount or a code, with minimum purchase or quantity requirements and start and end dates.
Where it gets harder is several tiers in one offer. A built-in discount has one requirement and one reward, so “10% at 2, 15% at 4, 20% at 6” means building and combining separate discounts and checking they do not clash. Rules like “only on weekends” or “only for returning customers” are also limited without an app.
Setting up a tiered discount well
- Pick tiers people will reach. If most orders have one item, a first tier at 2 units is achievable; a first tier at 10 is not.
- Keep the steps simple. Round numbers and three tiers at most are easy to understand at a glance.
- Check your margins at the top tier. The deepest discount is the one that costs you the most per order.
- Show the tiers on the product page. Customers cannot aim for a discount they do not know about.
- Make the cart say what is next. “Add 1 more to get 15% off” is the nudge that does the work.
- Decide how it combines with other offers. Choose whether a quantity tier can stack with a free shipping threshold or a code, before a customer finds out for you.
Why Shopify Functions matter
Older discount apps worked by changing prices in the cart with scripts added to your theme, which could break when the theme changed and did not always match what the checkout charged.
Shopify Functions are Shopify’s current way for apps to add discount logic. The logic runs inside Shopify’s own checkout, so the price a customer is shown is the price they pay, nothing is added to your theme, and uninstalling leaves nothing behind. Shopify has been moving discount customisation from its older Shopify Scripts to Functions, so it is the approach to look for in any discount app.
When you need an app
You likely need an app, or a custom one, if you want:
- several quantity tiers in one discount
- quantity tiers limited to chosen products or collections
- discounts that run only on certain days or hours
- discounts only for signed-in, new or returning customers
- a live preview of what a discount will do before you publish it
Our own app, EZ Master Discount, was built for exactly these cases on Shopify Functions. If your store needs rules no app offers, we also build custom Shopify apps.
